Abstract
DATA FROM THE LOUISIANA UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING SYSTEM AND THE LOUISIANA CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEM ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR AND CHART FORM. BETWEEN 1975 AND THE END OF 1976 CRIMINAL HOMICIDE DECREASED 3.6 PERCENT; BUT ALTHOUGH HOMICIDE IN MAJOR CITIES IS DECREASING, AN INCREASE IS NOTED IN RURAL AREAS. RAPE ROSE 40 PERCENT IN NONMETROPOLITAN AREAS, 8.3 PERCENT IN METROPOLITAN AREAS, AND 35.1 PERCENT IN THE SHREVEPORT AREA. AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS FOLLOWED A SIMILAR METROPLOLITAN VERSUS RURAL PATTERN. OVERALL, VIOLENT CRIME DECREASED BY 4.1 PERCENT. REFLECTING AN 8.4 PERCENT DECREASE IN URBAN AREAS BUT A 13.2 PERCENT INCREASE IN RURAL AREAS. OF ALL INDEX CRIMES REPORTED IN 1976, A TOTAL OF 89.3 PERCENT WERE PROPERTY CRIMES. THIS IS MAINLY A PROBLEM OF URBAN AREAS. BURGLARY AND LARCENY-THEFTS ACCOUNT FOR 82.4 PERCENT OF TOTAL INDEX CRIMES IN THE STATE. STATISTICS ARE GIVEN FOR ARRESTS, PRISONERS IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, CLEARANCE RATES, AND RECIDIVISM FOR EACH AREA OF THE STATE. BUDGETS FOR VARIOUS AGENCIES ARE GIVEN.
