In Victoria, Australia, 79 percent of female offenses were for theft in 1980. The official rate of thefts from shops by females increased 324 percent from 1960 to 1980.
Abstract
Changes in retail security procedures may explain some of the increase. In addition, perception of the women's movement by retail security staff may have produced more rigorous prosecution of female shoplifters. These findings are similar to those in American studies, indicating that while females are becoming more involved in crime, their patterns of crime are not changing. Three tables and seven references are provided. (Author abstract modified)
