IN ADDITION TO CRIME STATISTICS FOR SWEDEN FOR THE YEAR 1976 TO 1977, THIS ANNUAL REPORT PRESENTS AN OVERVIEW OF CRIMINALITY AND ITS TRENDS FROM 1950 TO 1977 FOR EIGHT CRIME CATEGORIES.
Abstract
THE CATEGORIES ARE RAPE, ROBBERY, BURGLARY, AUTO THEFT, ASSAULT, OTHER KINDS OF THEFT, AND ORGANIZED AND WHITE-COLLAR CRIME. POLICE REPORTS ARE THE BASIS FOR THE ANNUAL STATISTICS. THE FIGURES SHOW A MARKED INCREASE IN ALL TYPES OF CRIME, PARTICULARLY THEFT, SINCE 1950 WITH A SLIGHT LEVELING OFF IN 1977. IN A CURIOUS DEVELOPMENT, PERHAPS DUE TO A TIGHTENED SUPPLY OF DRUGS AND THUS LESS CRIME COMMITED TO OBTAIN CASH FOR DRUG PURCHASES, THE GREATER STOCKHOLM AREA EXPERIENCED A DROP IN BREAK-INS AND BURGLARIES DURING THE YEAR 1976 AND 1977. AT THE SAME TIME, SOME SMALLER CITIES, AND INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS, REPORTED AN INCREASE IN SUCH CRIMES. ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION RATES DROPPED OVERALL DURING THE YEAR, ALTHOUGH A DROP IN ABUSE RATES WAS NOT APPARENT. ALTHOUGH FIGURES ARE NOT RELIABLE CONCERNING NARCOTICS USE, A PESSIMISTIC TREND IS PRESUMED. COMPARED WITH THE REST OF SCANDINAVIA IN TERMS OF CRIME RATES, SWEDEN PREDOMINATES IN OFFENSE INCREASES FOR ROBBERIES, RAPE, AND BURGLARY, BUT IS BELOW THE AVERAGE IN OTHER TYPES OF THEFT AND WELL BELOW FINLAND IN AUTO THEFT RATES. WHEN COMPARED WITH THE U.S., ENGLAND, AND WEST GERMANY IN TERMS OF CRIME RATE INCREASES, SWEDEN SHOWS A DRAMATIC PREDOMINANCE IN ROBBERY INCREASES, BUT IS AVERAGE OR BELOW FOR OTHER TYPES OF CRIME RATE INCREASES. THIS STATISTICAL REPORT IS ACCOMPANIED BY A NUMBER OF SPECIAL ARTICLES PUBLISHED BY VARIOUS AUTHORS FOCUSING ON THE SUBJECTS OF FEMALE CRIMINALITY, THE NORM CLIMATE AND DEVIANCY, THE RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOOLS TO SOCIALIZE CHILDREN, INSURANCE FRAUD PERPETRATION AND ENFORCEMENT, AND THE FUNCTION OF POLICE IN VIEW OF CRIME DEVELOPMENTS. A FINAL PAPER IS AN EXPLANATION OF AND GUIDE TO THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE STATISTICS. TABULAR DATA AND GRAPHS ARE INCLUDED. --IN SWEDISH. (DAG)
