Part I reported crime rate decreased in 2001 for the fourth consecutive year in Delaware, with a decrease from 45.5 per 1,000 population in 2000 to 43.6 per 1,000 population in 2001. Combining Part I and Part II reported crimes, there were 244.9 crimes per 1,000 population in 2001, a 2.5-percent increase from 2000. The total number of reported violent crimes increased slightly, from 5,566 in 2000 to 5,620 in 2001. Reported homicide, robbery, and aggravated assault all increased statewide, and reported forcible rapes remained the same as the previous year. Reported Part I property crimes decreased for the fourth consecutive year, dropping from 30,117 in 2000 to 28,895 in 2001, (4.1-percent decrease). The property crimes of larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson all decreased from 2000 to 2001. Statewide total juvenile arrests increased for the third consecutive year, from 6,616 in 1998 to 9,107 in 2001, a 37.7-percent increase. Juvenile arrests for Part I crimes increased by 10.3 percent, with the majority of arrests being for property crimes. The majority of violent-crime arrests for juveniles, 64.7 percent, were for aggravated assault. The number of illicit drug complaints increased by 12.9 percent in 2001. The number of law enforcement officers employed in Delaware police departments totaled 1,639, the same as in 2000.
