This analysis of Delaware's 1989 uniform crime data presents the data under three offense categories: violent crimes, property crimes, and illicit drugs.
Abstract
Each section begins with a brief summary followed by supporting indexes of information. Breakdowns are also presented on crime complaints and clearances by jurisdiction and an index of law enforcement officers killed or assaulted in 1989. Delaware's annual crime rate has risen consecutively since 1983; 1989 figures show the State continuing in this pattern. The number of reported crimes in the State in 1989 was 124,994, approximately an 11-percent increase from the 1988 total of 112,742. The most significant increases are due to Part II crimes which are heavily influenced by drug offenses and violent Part I crimes. There has been a steady increase in rapes (11-percent increase since 1988) and a jump in the number of aggravated assaults from 1,706 in 1988 to 2,233 in 1989. This 24-percent increase is apparently connected to the relationship between aggravated assault and illicit drug activity. There has been a 48-percent increase in the number of drug arrests since 1988; cocaine arrests are the major source of this increase. Extensive tabular data and figures
