This report summarizes 3 months of crime reports received by the Peoria, Police Department (Illinois), organized under a new classification system designed to provide more detailed information to both the public and police managers.
Abstract
The new crime classification system was designed to be comprehensive, victim-oriented, geographically based, automated, and based on the best current criminological techniques. Instead of using legal crime classifications as a basis for reporting, the new system features five classification categories based on the type of harm experienced by the victim. These categories include injury, loss, injury and loss, injury to society or government, and crime with no injury or loss. This form of classification should increase the public's knowledge of the actual nature of crimes committed. Within these categories, detailed descriptive information is provided, including time and place of occurrence, level and type of injury, medical treatment received, victim/offender relationship, weapons used, nature and value of property stolen, and victim demographic information. The system provides the crime volume, crime rate, and crime trends. For all five crime categories, 4,261 occurrences were reported for the period between February 1 and April 30, 1980. Extensive graphs and charts are provided.
