This 2003 annual report presents data on the nature and extent of crime throughout Arizona.
Abstract
The Arizona Uniform Crime Reporting program collects and disseminates crime statistics offered voluntarily by local law enforcement agencies throughout the State. Section 1 offers details about the Arizona Uniform Crime Reporting system, while section 2 explains the National Incident-Based Reporting System, which is a voluntary crime data collection effort. Section 3 presents a summary of State crime data. The Arizona crime clock indicates that one major crime is committed every 1 minute and 33 seconds in Arizona. The Arizona crime cycle analysis indicates that in each 24 hour period in 2003, the following crimes were reported to Arizona law enforcement agencies: 1 murder, 5 rapes, 4 arsons, 21 robberies, 50 aggravated assaults, and 157 burglaries. Summaries are offered for 2003 Arizona crime data. Section 4 presents data regarding part I index crimes, which include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. During 2003, there were 440 murders reported in Arizona and there were 215 clearances for murder in 2003. A total of 1,825 rapes were reported during 2003; 226 persons were arrested and there were 538 clearances for rapes in 2003. There were 7,353 robberies reported during 2003, along with18,398 aggravated assaults and 57,449 burglaries. Section 5 offers county offense data and supplemental data, which are all offered in table format. Section 6 offers Arizona arrest data, which indicate that there were 312,576 arrests reported during 2003; 16 percent of arrests were for part I offenses, while 84 percent were for part II offenses. Adults comprised 83.1 percent of the arrests, while juveniles comprised 16.9 percent of 2003 arrests. Section 7 presents Arizona arrest data by county, while section 8 presents crime data by local law enforcement agency. Tables present information about the types of crimes reported by each law enforcement agency in Arizona. Section 9 offers information on assaults on law enforcement officers during 2003, including analyses of type of weapons used, frequency distribution, and distribution by county. Section 10 presents data on bias (hate) crimes, which indicate that 247 incidents of bias crimes were reported in Arizona in 2003. Tables, glossary
