Abstract
Book chapters attempt to synthesize and extend available information on the criminal justice system, the nature of law, explanations of criminal behavior, and other issues that are central to the question of social order in the next century. Chapters examine the nature of criminal justice in the 21st Century and the role of futures research, effects of the past on both the present and the future, and the usefulness of theoretical and criminological models in explaining crime in the year 2010. Other chapters focus on the influence of courts on law and crime control, the nature of common crime in the future, the community policing movement, and the future of criminal courts and sentencing. Final chapters examine the impact of economic, political, and social factors on local jails; the future of incarceration; the changing nature of probation and parole; drug legalization and drug-related crimes; the deterrent effect of the death penalty; and the future of the juvenile justice system.
