This document provides an analysis of crime statistics in Nassau County, New York over a ten-year period.
Abstract
A number of observations can be made as a result of this analysis: major crimes increased by 1.6 percent from 1986 to 1987; and violent crimes increased by 2.8 percent from 1986 to 1987. The clearance rate for major crimes increased from 15.4 percent in 1986 to 16.6 percent in 1987. Of the 1,669 robberies in 1987, a handgun was used in 442 incidents and 115 of these incidents occurred in the street. Overall property crime increased 1.5 percent from 1986 to 1987. During the ten-year period, there was an overall decrease of 12.3 percent in total crime. However, there was an increase of 55.7 percent in violent crimes, specifically the crimes of robbery increased 44.1 percent, assault 67.2 percent, and murder 104.5 percent, while property crime decreased by 15.3 percent. There were significant decreases in burglary and larceny. 13 tables and appendix.
