Abstract
The definitional, moral, and evidentiary problems in the application of the concept of dangerousness and its prediction are examined. Within the context of the British experience, the use, implementation, and policy implications of community service are discussed. The research on the effects of prison crowding on inmate health, violence, and recidivism also are reviewed. Crime control policy is discussed within the context of dispositional and situational theories of criminal behavior and realted research. A model for prospectively predicting recidivism is presented and tested against research from several longitudinal and cohort studies of young offenders. Recent changes in public attitude and law regarding the insanity defense are discussed with special focus on position papers issued by the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Bar Association. Finally, the organization of an trends in criminological research in Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, and Finland are summarized. For separate papers, see NCJ 98381-87.
