PART OF THE IMPACT CITY CRIME AND VICTIMIZATION SURVEYS.
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION IS A PROFILE OF THE CITY OF PORTLAND; THE SECOND SECTION DESCRIBES THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND DISCUSSES HOW THE SYSTEM DEALS WITH CRIME AND VICTIMS OF CRIME. THE THIRD AND MAJOR SECTION PRESENTS THE SURVEY DATA AND THE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF SURVEY RESULTS. THE FINAL SECTION DISCUSSES ADDITIONAL LOCAL DATA. CARRIED OUT DURING JULY AND AUGUST OF 1972, THE SURVEY COVERED VICTIMIZATIONS OCCURRING DURING THE PREVIOUS TWELVE MONTHS. SELECTED BY SCIENTIFIC SAMPLING PROCEDURES, APPROXIMATELY 10,000 HOUSEHOLDS - ABOUT 21,000 INDIVIDUALS AGE 12 AND OVER - AND ABOUT 1,300 COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS WERE INTERVIEWED AS TO WHETHER THEY HAD BEEN VICTIMIZED BY CERTAIN TYPES OF INCIDENTS. FOR INDIVIDUALS THESE WERE RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT AND PERSONAL LARCENY; FOR HOUSEHOLDS, BURGLARY, LARCENY AND AUTO THEFT; AND FOR COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS, ROBBERY AND BURGLARY. IN ADDITION TO ESTIMATING THE NUMBERS OF THESE INCIDENTS, THE SURVEY EXAMINES CHARACTERISTICS OF VICTIMS, TIME AND PLACE OF OCCURRENCE, AMOUNT OF LOSS, WHETHER THE CRIME WAS REPORTED TO POLICE AND REASONS FOR NOT REPORTING; AND FOR PERSONAL INCIDENTS, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VICTIM AND OFFENDER.
