Abstract
From 1980 to 1981, there was a .5-percent decrease in total crimes as measured by the seven major offenses. A 2.6-percent decrease occurred in crimes against persons, and a .1-percent decrease occurred in crimes against property. From 1980 to 1981, total arrests increased 6.3 percent,and the number of felony arrests increased 3.8 percent. The number of status offense arrests decreased 10.1 percent. Of the adult felony arrestees who received a final disposition, 25.6 percent were released by Law enforcement and prosecutors, 74.4 percent had complaints filed against them, and 56.8 percent were convicted. The number of adults under supervision increased 4.2 percent from 1980 to 1981. In the juvenile justice system, a 3.5-percent decrease occurred in the number of initial referrals to probation departments, and the number of juveniles on caseload status decreased 5.7 percent. A 15.3-percent increase in total criminal justice agency expenditures was reported. Tables and graphs are provided. (Author summary modified)
