SUMMARY OF FINDINGS OF MARYLAND PUBLIC OPINION SURVEY ON ISSUES RELATED TO CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THIS STUDY, MADE FOR THE MARYLAND GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION ON LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE, FOCUSED ON FIVE AREAS OF PUBLIC ATTITUDES: THE PRIORITY MARYLAND RESIDENTS ASSIGN TO CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROBLEMS, THEIR FAMILIARITY AND EXPERIENCE WITH THE MARYLAND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, ATTITUDES TOWARD IMMEDIATE AND LONG RANGE SOLUTIONS, WILLINGNESS OF PUBLIC TO COMMIT TAX DOLLARS TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF CRIME. A SCIENTIFICALLY SELECTED CROSS SECTION OF 1,263 PERSONS WAS INTERVIEWED THROUGHOUT THE STATE IN MAY-JUNE 1976. DATA INCLUDED IN THIS SUMMARY REPORT IS COMPARED WITH RESULTS FROM A SIMILAR STUDY CONDUCTED IN JULY 1974. THE FINDINGS ARE PRESENTED IN TWO FORMS, AS PURELY STATISTICAL RESULTS WHICH SHOW CURRENT RESPONSES COMPARED TO 1974 RESPONSES AS WELL AS AN EXTRACTION AND EXPLANATION OF THE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES WHICH HAVE OCCURRED IN THE PAST TWO YEARS....MSP
