Based on the experiences of nine medium-to- large law enforcement agencies that participated in crime analysis assessments under the Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA's) National Public Safety Partnership (PSP) program, this report summarizes the common findings and recommendations of these agencies from their engagement in the analysis and use of crime data to make informed decisions, respond effectively, and prevent violent crime.
Abstract
The findings and recommendations are presented for each of the three major components of the crime analysis assessments. These components are 1) adoption of new analytical techniques and intelligence-driven policing strategies for violence reduction; 2) investment in analytical personnel; and 3) the use of geographic information systems-based analysis. In addition to assisting agencies in evaluating their capabilities and capacity to analyze and use data to make informed decisions, respond effectively, and prevent crime, this assessment also identifies the various crime analysis training and technical assistance (TTA) opportunities that support agencies in developing and improving their crime analysis capacities.
