INTENDED FOR STUDENTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, THIS PAPER PROVIDES AN INTRODUCTION TO BASIC STATISTICAL CONCEPTS AND OPERATIONS, AND PRESENTS A SAMPLE RESEARCH PROBLEM TO ILLUSTRATE THESE STATISTICAL METHODS.
Abstract
THE VARIOUS USES OF STATISTICS AND CRIME ANALYSIS ARE OUTLINED IN THE INITIAL SECTIONS OF THIS REPORT. SUCH STATISTICAL CONCEPTS AS SAMPLES, POPULATIONS, THE NORMAL CURVE, VARIABILITY, CORRELATIONS, AND CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS ARE EXAMINED. THE METHODS OF CALCULATING FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS, PERCENTILES; AVERAGES, STANDARD DEVIATIONS, CORRELATIONS, AND CHI SQUARES ARE EXPLAINED. THE SAMPLE RESEARCH PROBLEM INCLUDED IN THIS REPORT INVOLVES THE ADMINISTRATION AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF A POLICE COMMUNICATIONS QUESTIONNAIRE.
