Abstract
Crime statistics are compiled for the State, Alabama's nine metropolitan statistical areas, sheriff's offices, municipal police departments, and campus police. UCR data deal with criminal activity in a specific geographic area rather than with law enforcement agency activities. The Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating UCR data. In 1993, 198,356 index crimes were reported, a 2-percent decrease from 1992. Index crimes included homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The crime rate for the State was 4,737.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, with an average of 543 index crimes reported daily. The value of stolen property totaled $204,087,417; 19 percent was recovered. In 1993, 420 law enforcement officers were assaulted; 33 percent received serious injuries and 67 percent received minimal or no injuries.
