WORKSHOPS SPONSORED BY THE GARDINER HOWLAND SHAW FOUNDATION TO IMPROVE THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE COURTS IN MASSACHUSETTS THROUGH COURT REFORM PROJECTS ARE REPORTED.
Abstract
SIX ALL-DAY WORKSHOPS WERE CONVENED DURING THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 29 TO DECEMBER 3, 1976. WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS CONSISTED OF NOTED AND ACTIVE PROFESSIONALS IN VARIOUS FIELDS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, INCLUDING JUDGES, PROBATION OFFICERS, DISTRICT ATTORNEYS, PROFESSORS AND AUTHORS, DIRECTORS OF RECOGNIZED COURT AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, REPRESENTATIVES OF LEGAL SERVICE PROGRAMS, AND CONCERNED CITIZENS. WORKSHOPS ADDRESSED SIX MAJOR AREAS: (1) CREATIVE SENTENCING, (2) PROBATION, (3) COURT ADMINISTRATION, (4) PROSECUTION AND DEFENSE, (5) JUVENILE JUSTICE AND (6) PUBLIC LEGAL RIGHTS EDUCATION. WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS DISCUSSED PROBLEMS AND NEEDS AND MADE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE COURTS. THE SHAW FOUNDATION PLANS TO CONCENTRATE FUNDING GRANTS IN THREE MAJOR CATEGORIES (CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR OUTSTANDING PAST GRANTEES, SUPPORT FOR INNOVATIVE AND UNIQUE PROPOSALS, AND SUPPORT FOR SPECIFIC FOCUS PROJECTS). PROCEDURAL GUIDELINES FOR GRANT APPLICATION HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED BY THE FOUNDATION. APPENDIXES CONTAIN A LIST OF WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS AND A SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GRANT FUNDING BY THE FOUNDATION. (DEP)
