Directed mainly to court managers, this report explains the nature, costs, and other features of document imaging as a means of storing documents in computer databases, with emphasis on the information needed to evaluate the applicability of imaging to a particular situation and on the steps involved in obtaining and implementing imaging.
Abstract
The report presents the basic terminology used, the current and probable future nature of imaging, and examples of imaging in court and noncourt sites. Additional sections describe imaging functions, equipment, and software; situations in which imaging applies; the advantages, disadvantages, costs, and standards of imaging; management considerations; and advice from sites using imaging. Further chapters explain the steps involved in acquiring and implementing an imaging system, including analysis and planning, approval, procurement, and implementation, and explore future technology such as open architecture, optical character recognition, text retrieval, and compound documents. The uses of imaging in California general civil, jury, and municipal court case processing; in two State executive branch agencies; and in a major transportation corporation are also described.
