This report from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections (DOC) presents court commitment statistics for the year 2000.
Abstract
Presenting statistical descriptions of the individuals committed to Massachusetts DOC facilities by the courts during 2000, this report details the demographic characteristics of the DOC 2000 commitment population through a series of figures and tables. The report presents the inmates according to race, ethnicity, marital status, religion, and age at the time of incarceration, and focuses on the current offenses of committed individuals, describing a series of categories of offenses, including offenses against persons and property, sex, drug, and other offenses. After addressing person, sex, property, drug, and other offenses by gender, this report details sentencing for 2000. A series of tables indicating minimum and maximum sentencing and the court from which an individual was committed, by gender, are also presented. Various DOC trends from 1991 to 2000 are presented as a series of tables, including commitments by gender, race, ethnicity, age at the time of incarceration, current offense categories, and minimum, maximum, and life sentencing. A glossary of terms used throughout this report is followed by an appendix detailing various types of offenses by category.
