Abstract
THE RESULTS REPORTED ARE BASED ON THE QUESTIONNAIRES RETURNED BY 66 COUNTIES AND ON DATA, INCLUDING POPULATION AND POLICE DEPARTMENT SIZE, SUPPLIED BY THE BUREAU OF THE CENSUS FOR THE 66 COUNTIES. RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT 88 PER CENT HAVE 100 OR MORE EMPLOYEES AND OVER ON-HALF HAD FULL CAPACITY IN THE AREAS OF PATROL, RECORDS, COMMUNICATION, AND INVESTIGATION. THE SURVEY ALSO INDICATED THAT COUNTY AGENCIES ARE KEY SERVICE PROVIDERS TO MUNICIPAL DEPARTMENTS. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS A COPY OF THE SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE, A LIST OF THE COUNTIES SURVEYED TOGETHER WITH THEIR POPULATIONS, A STATE-BY-STATE LISTING DEPARTMENTS WITH APPOINTED POLICE EXECUTIVES, AND A LIST OF THE ELEVEN CONSOLIDATED COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN THE 97 SURVEYED URBAN COUNTIES.
