SOCIETY OF FRIENDS JAIL REFORM PROJECT INFORMATION GATHERING PROCEDURES, CHANGE STRATEGIES AND GOALS, AND THE MECHANICS OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNITY ACTION.
Abstract
THE REPORT DESCRIBES HOW DELAWARE COUNTY CITIZENS BECAME AWARE OF AND ATTEMPTED TO INITIATE CHANGE IN THE CONDITIONS OF THE LOCAL COUNTY JAIL. THIS PROJECT WAS PART OF AN EFFORT TO FIND WAYS OF DEALING WITH WHITE INSTITUTIONAL RACISM AND ITS CONCOMITANT RESULTS IN BLACK GHETTOS. INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN REACTIONS TO JAIL VISITS, PRISONER AND JAIL ACCESS PROBLEMS, AND ADMINISTRATION RESISTANCE ARE DISCUSSED. MEANS OF GATHERING INFORMATION ABOUT THE JAIL SUCH AS ATTENDING BOARD MEETINGS AND TALKING WITH PRISONERS ARE PROPOSED. THE REPORT ALSO COVERS CONSIDERATIONS OF JAIL ADMINISTRATION (PERSONAL HYGIENE, VISITING, ETC.) AND WAYS OF REDUCING THE JAIL CONCLUDES WITH DISCUSSIONS OF THE MECHANICS AND PROCESS OF EFFECTIVE CITIZEN ACTION, AND OF SPECIFIC PROJECTS WHICH CAN BE UNDERTAKEN.
