This report covers commitment rates per 100,000 in the State of California in 1988 by county and region, gender of felon, and in comparison with previous years.
Abstract
During 1988, there were 29,551 felon new admissions from court and 8,458 parole violators returned to prison with a new term (PV-WNT), all-time highs for the California Department of Corrections. New admissions from court increased 10.9 percent from 1987, 60.6 percent from 1983, and 217.0 percent from 1978. PV-WNT's increased 32.6 percent from 1987, 168.5 percent from 1983, and 437.4 percent from 1978. The ten largest counties of commitment were Los Angeles (16,631), San Diego (2,540), Alameda (1,754), Santa Clara (1,574), San Francisco (1,484), Orange (1,476), San Bernardino (1,342), Riverside (1,328), Sacramento (1,288), and Fresno (1,037). Yuba County had the highest rate, with 274.6 commitments per 100,000 population, followed by Madera County at 272.7. Mariposa County had the lowest rate, 6.9 per 100,000. The total number of male felons newly admitted from court or PV-WNT was 34,963 (123.5 per 100,000); of female felons, 3,046 (10.8 per 100,000). 3 tables, 3 graphs.
