Abstract
This book, written for corporate decisionmakers as well as for students and overseas travelers and centered around the author’s 10 principles in corporate counterterrorism, explores in depth the extraordinary risks terrorist pose to multinational corporations and suggests strategies for prevention and response. The Ackerman Principles consist of (1) understanding the global terrorist threat to commercial interests, (2) become an informed business manager and understand the risk that pertain to the areas to which business is being done or where business in intended to be done, (3) do not be intimidated by the risks, (4) weigh the risks against the potential rewards of a given project and devise strategies for curtailing risks, (5) investigate thoroughly key employees, distributors, vendors, joint venture partners, and domestics, (6) train personnel bound for high-risk areas in protective tactics, (7) do not be blind to security technology, (8) well-trained bodyguards have a protective role to play, but their value is more in deterring attacks and forestalling them, (9) if confronted by terrorists, choose reason over heroism, and (10) prepare diligently for crises. In addressing these 10 principles, the author covers such topics as kidnapping and extortion, bodyguards and armored vehicles, and residential security. Each is supported with concrete examples drawn from experience in intelligence, military security, and corporate security. Index
