BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF 30 PROGRAMS THAT HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING SCHOOL VANDALISM ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE PROGRAMS WERE SELECTED FROM 97 RESPONSES TO A QUESTIONNAIRE CIRCULATED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY BY THE COUNCIL OF THE GREAT CITY SCHOOLS. THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WERE USED IN SELECTING THE PROGRAMS: REDUCTION OF INCIDENTS OF VANDALISM OR DOLLARS SPENT BECAUSE OF SUCH INCIDENTS; REPLICABILITY; COMPREHENSIVENESS; RELATIVE SOPHISTICATION; AND INNOVATIVENESS. THE PROGRAMS FALL WITHIN THE GENERAL CATEGORIES OF BUILDING SECURITY, TARGET HARDENING, ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, OFFENDER ACCOUNTABILITY/RESPONSIBILITY, BEHAVIOR CHANGE IN STUDENTS, HUMAN RELATIONS, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE, AND CURRICULUM INNOVATION. THE PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS VARY IN LENGTH, BUT GENERALLY ARE LIMITED TO THE MAJOR INNOVATIVE FEATURES AND/OR OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE PROGRAM. (LKM)
