A VARIETY OF DATA SOURCES ARE USED TO ESTIMATE THE COST OF CRIMES AGAINST BUSINESSES IN GENERAL AND AGAINST BUSINESSES IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN IN PARTICULAR. IN 1975 THE COST TO MICHIGAN BUSINESS WAS $2,019.2 MILLION.
Abstract
THIS STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USES INFORMATION FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, THE MICHIGAN STATE POLICE, AND THE SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION TO DEVELOP ITS ESTIMATES. CRIME COSTS INCLUDE INVENTORY SHORTAGES, 'ORDINARY CRIMES' (SUCH AS LARCENY, ROBBERY, AND BURGLARY), ARSON, FRAUD, AND WHITE COLLAR CRIME. EACH CATEGORY IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, WHICH COMPUTES CRIME LOSS ON A PER CAPITA BASIS, ESTIMATES THAT IN 1975 MICHIGAN BUSINESSES LOST ABOUT $1,025.5 MILLION DUE TO CRIME OTHER THAN WHITE COLLAR CRIME. THIS ANALYSIS ADJUSTS THE LOSS TO $1,404.8 MILLION BECAUSE THE STATE IS HIGHLY INDUSTRIALIZED AND VULNERABLE TO MORE EXPENSIVE TYPES OF CRIME. ADDING THE THE ORDINARY CRIME AND WHITE COLLAR CRIME FIGURES GIVES AN ESTIMATED TOTAL LOSS OF $2,019.2 MILLION. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE COST OF CRIME AGAINST INDIVIDUALS. THE AMOUNT SPENT ON SECURITY IS ALSO ESTIMATED AT 195.5 MILLION. TABLES PRESENT THE STATISTICS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS
