Abstract
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) conducted a 3-year statewide review of data on collisions and collision rates. This yielded 550 roadway segments for consideration as part of corridor safety programs. Such programs are local or regional in scope, and focus on highway segments or groups of roads (corridors) that have a poor safety record. A task force charged with reviewing the collision data developed an action plan for enforcement, emergency services, engineering, and education strategies. The article describes safety improvements along one particular corridor and the reduction in the number of collisions, injuries, and fatalities on the corridor since the program began. Collaborative efforts involving law enforcement, fire protection services, emergency medical services, traffic management, emergency communications, and others can produce extraordinary traffic safety benefits. The article emphasizes that the multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to traffic safety can save lives and prevent injuries. Figures, tables
