This booklet presents statistics on state and federal adult correctional agencies in the United States and Canada. Data are presented in three major categories: Population Profile; Institutions, Budgets and Programs; and Administration and Staff.
Abstract
The data reported in this volume were extracted from survey questionnaires completed by correctional agencies from all 50 of the United States, the District of Columbia, the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Correctional Service of Canada. Researchers made follow-up telephone calls to verify and gather additional information. Responses were tabulated and, where appropriate, averaged, compared with other subject categories or compared with data collected from prior research. The information is presented in narrative, tabular, and graphic formats. The 68 categories of information include: (1) Inmate Profile by Gender and Ethnic Composition; (2) Incarceration Rates; (3) Inmates with Prior Records, Recidivism Rates; (4) Inmates Captured After Fleeing; (5) Inmates on Death Row; (6) Correctional Agency Capacities by Security Level; (7) Cost of Operating Prison Systems; (8) Boot Camp Costs, Lengths and Successes; (9) Community Treatment Centers; (10) Staff Turnover; (11) Employee Drug Testing; and (12) Accreditation in Adult Agencies.
