This 1985 yearbook presents statistical data relating to populations, administration, and staffing of correctional institutions in the United States.
Abstract
Data are based on questionnaire responses from 51 adult, 43 juvenile, 45 probation, and 49 jail agencies. Tables provide information on the numbers and types of facilities, daily populations, lengths of sentences, budgets and programs, correctional officer training and salaries, and officer-inmate ratios. Additional data examine overcrowding, privatization, and employee deaths. In some instances, data are compared with other subject categories or with that from previous years. In 1985, 485,321 inmates were confined; 96,141 juveniles were under residential and nonresidential care; and 1,388,451 individuals were on probation, according to the responding institutions.
