This booklet asks and answers several dozen questions regarding the adult and juvenile correctional systems in the United States, the United States probation systems, and Canadian correctional systems.
Abstract
Narrative summaries and data tables focus on the numbers of institutions and inmates, inmate characteristics, sentence lengths, population projections, escapes, violent deaths of inmates, and inmates on death row. Other sections cover facility capacities, budgets, inmate programs, inmate lawsuits and grievance procedures, releases on parole, accreditation, administration, and staffing. Further sections discuss probation results and costs, the numbers and salaries of probation officers, juvenile facilities and commitments, and the Federal and provincial correctional systems of Canada. An introduction notes that crime and incarceration rates vary greatly across the country and that overcrowding will probably increase further before it declines. Data tables.
