Abstract
THE EDITORS OPEN THIS EXAMINATION OF THE CURRENT STATE OF AMERICAN CORRECTIONS WITH A SERIES OF ARTICLES THAT PROVIDE A SERIOUS CHALLENGE TO THE VIABILITY OF CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONAL PRACTICES AND PROGRAMS. A NUMBER OF DISCUSSIONS ARE THEN INCLUDED WHICH EXAMINE SOME OF THE MORE SALIENT PROBLEMS THAT BOTH CORRECTIONAL PRACTITIONERS AND OFFENDERS MUST DEAL WITH ON A DAILY BASIS. AMONG THESE ARE PRISON DEGRADATIONS, PROBLEMS OF CONSENSUAL AND COERCIVE INVOLVEMENT IN HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP, INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE, PRISON RIOTS, PROBLEMS IN REINTEGRATION OF THE EX-OFFENDER, AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE IN THE CORRECTIONAL PROCESS. AN OVERVIEW OF THE MANY NEW AND INNOVATIVE CORRECTIONAL APPROACHES BEING DEVELOPED IS THEN PROVIDED. ARTICLES ARE INCLUDED ON SUCH DIVERSE AREAS AS TREATMENT THEORY IN CORRECTIONS, TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR THE SPECIAL OFFENDER, INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS FOR DEALING WITH THE JUVENILE DELINQUENT, CONJUGAL VISITATION IN PRISON, SHORT-TERM INCARCERATION, WORK-RELEASE, AND OTHER COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMS. FINALLY, TWO ARTICLES ARE PRESENTED WHICH OUTLINE POSSIBLE DIRECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN CORRECTIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED) (SNI ABSTRACT)
