Corrections departments in the United States are seeking a composite increase of approximately 25 percent in their 1991-92 budgets over the year before.
Abstract
Forty States, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and four Canadian systems submitted their proposed (or already adopted) 1991-92 budgets for this survey. Data are presented in the following categories: (1) Total Department of Corrections (DOC) budget proposal; (2) Operational costs; (3) Construction costs; (4) Governor's recommendation; (5) Dates of legislative action; (6) Budget would provide for increased number[s] of employees, new facilities, new beds. There is a separate chart showing the following data for the respondents' proposals by program: (1) Total DOC 1991-92 budget proposal; (2) Amount for custody/security percent of total budget; (3) Amount for treatment/programming/percent of total budget; (4) Amount for adult institutions/total, male, female; (5) Amounts for juvenile institutions/total, male, female; (6) Amount for community programs, excluding parole; and (7) Amount for parole.
