Abstract
THE PROJECT WAS BASED ON A COALITION OF SIX NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS (AMERICAN G.I. FORUM, AMERICAN JEWISH COMMITTEE, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE, NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE LEGISLATORS, NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC LAITY/U.S. CATHOLIC CONFERENCE, NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF BUSINESS), WHICH WORKED WITH THE INSTITUTE OF URBAN STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON, IN PLANNING PROJECT ACTIVITIES. THIS REPORT FOCUSES ON THE CONTENT AND EVALUATION (INCLUDING PARTICIPANTS' ASSESSMENTS) OF CITIZEN-ORIENTED CONFERENCES ON PUNISHMENT, RESTITUTION AND CRIME VICTIMS, INCARCERATION, JUVENILE JUSTICE, AND REHABILITATION. THE REPORT ALSO SUMMARIZES THE CONTENT OF MATERIALS ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM PREPARED BY THE PROJECT FOR USE BY CITIZEN GROUPS. THESE MATERIALS INCLUDE A MANUAL ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES FOR LAY PERSONS AND A SOURCEBOOK ON PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH OF ITNEREST TO CITIZENS' GROUPS. ALSO INCLUDED IN THE REPORT IS A SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT'S TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE ACTIVITIES: DIRECT ASSISTANCE TO CITIZENS' GROUPS IN PLANNING CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAMS; 'TRAINING OF TRAINER' SESSIONS FOR COALITION MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS IN THE USE OF PROJECT MATERIALS; AND LOCAL WORKSHOPS FOR CITIZENS' GROUPS ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE GOAL SETTING, PROGRAM PLANNING, COALITION BUILDING, FUNDING, AND EVALUATION.
