TWO PILOT EFFORTS TO IMPLEMENT THE CAPABILITIES OF ADVANCED INFORMATION SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY TO CORRECTIONAL MANAGEMENT.
Abstract
APPENDIX D, IN VOLUME FOUR OF A SIX-PART SERIES, DETAILS THE COMPUTER - SUPPORTED SIMULATION EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED AT TWO PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS. REMOTE TERMINALS WERE ESTABLISHED AT THE MEETING SITES AND CONNECTED WITH THE PROJECT'S OFFENDER DATA BASE IN CALIFORNIA. SPECIFIC TYPES OF DATA BASE SEARCH STRATEGIES WERE DEMONSTRATED BY THE PARTICIPANTS' ASKING SUCH SPECIFIC QUESTIONS AS DESCRIBE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NARCOTICS POPULATION CURRENTLY ON PAROLE. OF PARTICULAR IMPACT WAS THE SYSTEMS CAPABILITY OF MATCHING OFFENDER OCCUPATIONAL/VOCATIONAL SKILLS TO RELEVANT INSTITUTIONAL AND COMMUNITY JOB OPENINGS. APPENDIX E DESCRIBES A PILOT STUDY TO DISCOVER THE KINDS OF DATA IMPORTANT TO CORRECTIONAL DECISION MAKING AND PROPER METHODS OF DATA PRESENTATION. CORRECTIONAL DECISIONS INVOLVE A LARGE NUMBER OF VARIABLES AND UNORGANIZED DATA. THIS STUDY ATTEMPTED TO ISOLATE AND PRESENT THESE FACTORS IN SYSTEMATIC FASHION BY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE COMPUTER'S ANALYTIC CAPABILITIES. TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON SYSTEMS DESIGN AND DATA ANALYSIS, AS WELL AS EVALUATIONS OF THESE TWO PROJECTS ARE INCLUDED, FOR OTHER VOLUMES IN THIS SERIES SEE NCJRS DOCUMENTS 05860, 05861, 05858, 05848, AND 05843.
