COMMENTARY ON THE NATURE, PROBLEMS, AND PROCESSES OF CORRECTIONAL REFORM AND REPLIES TO A SURVEY WHICH ASKED RESPONDENTS TO IDENTIFY THE MOST URGENTLY NEEDED REFORMS.
Abstract
THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS IN CITIZEN INITIATED REFORM MOVEMENTS IS EXPLAINED. TECHNIQUES OF REFORM, THE CONTEMPORARY REFORM MOVEMENT IN CORRECTIONS, OBSTACLES TO REFORM, AND THE OFFENDER'S ROLE IN CORRECTIONS ARE DISCUSSED. NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAMS, THE POTENTIAL OF COMMUNITY TREATMENT CENTERS, THE SCOPE OF REFORMATION IN CORRECTIONS, AND THE REHABILITATIVE POSSIBILITIES OF CORRECTIONS ARE ANALYZED. THE REPLIES OF THE SURVEY RESPONDENTS OFFER DIVERSE VIEWS ON THE REFORMS THAT ARE NECESSARY IN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM- CASE MANAGEMENT OF POTENTIAL CAREER CRIMINALS, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ONE DEPARTMENT IN EACH STATE TO ADMINISTER ALL CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES, THE UPGRADING OF CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVES TO PRISON. A BIBLIOGRAPHY ON CORRECTIONAL REFORM IS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT.
