Abstract
THE BOOK EXPLORES THE PROCESSES BY WHICH PRISON POLICY IS IMPLEMENTED THROUGH ALL THE MANAGERIAL LEVELS OF THE INSTITUTION. USING THE RESULTS OF A THOROUGH ANALYSIS OF AN ADULT MALE PRISON COMPLEX - THE MINIMUM SECURITY CONNECTICUT CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION AT ENFIELD - AND SURVEY RESULTS FROM A WIDE VARIETY OF OTHER INSTITUTIONS, THE AUTHOR CONSTRUCTS A CORRECTIONAL POLICY TYPOLOGY FROM WHICH HE DRAWS FOUR MODELS INTO WHICH EVERY PRISON CAN BE FIT: RESTRAINT, REFORM, REHABILITATION, AND REINTEGRATION. HE DEFINES MANAGERIAL BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES APPROPRIATE TO EACH MODEL AND INDICATES HOW PRISON MANAGERS CAN, BY CHANGING THEIR ACTIONS IN DEALING WITH THEIR STAFFS - EVEN WITHOUT CONCOMITANT CHANGES OF POLICY - ALTER THE GENERAL ORGANIZATIONAL FOCUS OF A PRISON. THIS BOOK IS INTENDED FOR PRISON ADMINISTRATORS AND WORKERS, CRIMINOLOGICS, SOCIAL CASEWORKERS, AND ORGANIZATIONAL SOCIOLOGISTS. A FIVE PAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED. (SNI ABSTRACT)
