COLLECTION OF ARTICLES ON PRISON ARCHITECTURE ILLUSTRATED WITH SKETCHES AND DRAWINGS EMPHASIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENT ON CORRECTIONAL TREATMENT.
Abstract
IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CORRECTIONAL ENVIRONMENTS, ARCHITECTS CAN PLAN FOR THE FULL RANGE OF SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY FOR BOTH SECURITY AND TREATMENT. THIS WELL-ILLUSTRATED COLLECTION OF ARTICLES PRESENTS INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO THE DESIGN OF EFFECTIVE MULTI-PURPOSE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES. THE FIRST ARTICLE PROVIDES A SYNOPSIS OF THE DIVERSITY OF THE NEW INTERDISCIPLINARY EFFORTS INVOLVING ARCHITECTS AND LEADING OFFICIALS IN CORRECTIONS, AS WELL AS THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S SUPPORT AND INVOLVEMENT IN THESE VENTURES. THE SECOND ARTICLE DEVELOPS A CONCISE BACKGROUND OF OUR CORRECTIONAL FACILITY LEGACY AND SURVEYS THE RESULTS WHICH ARE EMERGING FROM THE NEW ARCHITECTURAL EFFORTS IN CONJUNCTION WITH CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONAL PHILOSOPHIES. THE NEXT ARTICLE EXAMINES TWO SIGNIFICANT DEPARTURES FROM TRADITIONAL PRISON DESIGN WHICH RETAIN SECURITY CONTROLS BUT SUPPORT REHABILITATIVE EFFORTS. A STRONG COMMITMENT TO DEVELOPING ENVIRONMENT FOR COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS IS EVIDENCED AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL. THE FOURTH ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE U.S. BUREAU OF PRISONS AND ITS ACTIVE LEADERSHIP ROLE IN DEVELOPING MEANINGFUL ALTERNATIVES TO EXISTING FACILITIES. A TOTAL SYSTEM PLANNING APPROACH FOR LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND STATE LEVELS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM AND ITS ENVIRONMENTS IS PRESENTED IN THE CONCLUDING ARTICLE. A BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE BACKGROUND AND CURRENT ACTIVITIES OF THE LEAA SUPPORTED NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE IS ALSO INCLUDED.
