This article describes the objectives, development, and features of a CD-ROM designed to provide a self-help means for Australian youth to develop cognitive-behavioral skills that can relieve various anxieties.
Abstract
Designed for 14-18 year-olds, the CD-ROM uses a combination of media (text, audio, illustrations, cartoons, and video) to deliver information, examples, activities, and exercises. The program consists of eight modules, with each taking 15-30 minutes to complete. The modules suggest how to get the best results from the program; describe a technique for replacing anxious thoughts with calmer ones; illustrate a technique that helps users face their fears with a step-by-step strategy; propose strategies that can help youth deal with anxiety; and offer tips for preventing future problems with anxiety. The CD-ROM is intended to help meet current mental health treatment gaps for adolescents with anxiety disorders. The team that developed it was composed of clinical psychologists, an instructional designer, a computer programmer, graphic artists, and a videographer. The development of content was guided by an advisory board composed of psychologists, academics, and youth. An evaluation of the program is currently being conducted. It is examining the effects of the program on 150 youth with anxiety disorders. 5 figures and 28 references
