The course is sponsored by the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Forensic Technology Center of Excellence. This course was originally presented at the 2015 Impression, Pattern and Trace Evidence Symposium (IPTES) under the section on Forensic Science, Forensic Technology, Impression Pattern Evidence, Law Enforcement Training, and Trace Evidence. The course, which lasts approximately 30 minutes, presents a certificate to those who complete it, and it is recommended for forensic practitioners. The course consists of a case study of the investigation of the mass murders of a mother and her three children in June 2007. The convicted killer, Christopher Vaughn, was the husband and father of the victims. Forensic evidence collected from the crime scene and from the clothes of the defendant was critical in obtaining a conviction. The objective of this course is to show how forensic and trace evidence were collected and analyzed to produce the evidence needed for the conviction.
