This report, the fourth in a series to be published annually, examines trends in the number of convictions and in sentencing in New Zealand over the 10-year period between 1984 and 1993.
Abstract
Following an introductory chapter, the report presents tables showing the outcome of prosecutions for all offenses except traffic offenses over the past 8 years, and discusses the trends. Two subsequent chapters describe information on the age, gender, and ethnicity of offenders who were convicted of all offenses except traffic offenses, which are dealt with in a separate chapter, and trends in sentencing for these offenders. The remainder of the report discusses types of offenses committed by young offenders and the sentences imposed on them, compares imprisonment rates in New Zealand and Australia, and examines changes in offending in recent years among different age groups. 104 tables and 5 figures
