This is a report on the status of women in Colombia, as addressed in the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
Abstract
Part one contains descriptions of relevant legal and other measures adopted in the country between April 1987 and November 1992. The sections in part two provide concrete information regarding each topic addressed by the articles of the convention: temporary measures to accelerate equality, sex roles and stereotypes, prostitution, political and public life, participation in the diplomatic service, nationality, education, employment, health, social and economic benefits, rural women, equality before the law, marriage and family law, and violence against women. A trend of improvement in the status of women in Colombia began in the 1950's as women became more involved in education, production, and politics. A major positive influence has been a drastic reduction in the fertility rate--from 6.8 in the early 1950's to 2.9 currently. Despite significant progress, inequities persist, particularly affecting the poorest women.
