Abstract
PUNISHMENT SEEMS TO STRENGTHEN INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR FOR SOME INMATES. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT FROM CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS HELPS BRING OUT DESIRABLE BEHAVIOR IN MANY INMATES. THE INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE SHAPED TO CONDUCE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR FROM THE POPULATION. ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR SHOULD BE SHOWN TO INMATES BY THE STAFF.
