The mass transit industry vividly illustrates the two primary issues for any business: protecting assets and revenues and preserving the corporate image. One way in which the mass transit industry can reduce expenses and risk exposure is to use contract security.
Abstract
Contract security can permit the company to insulate itself from liability, provide an alternative to reliance on public policing, and create a high perception of safety. The transit environment offers opportunities for the use of contract security in a number of principal functions: station patrols; revenue pickup; parking areas; yards and buildings; monitoring security hardware; and miscellaneous security areas, including employee background checks, surveillance, and undercover investigations. The success of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) in integrating contract security with an existing transit police function is illustrative of how these services can work together to achieve management objectives.
