This book provides practical information for police patrol officers.
Abstract
An in-depth review of the history of law enforcement is provided in Chapter 1, along with the recent changes in many areas of law enforcement, such as advances in equipment and training. Also covered are State and Federal law enforcement and the tradition of ethics. Chapter 2 introduces the types of patrol, which include automobile, foot, horse, and boat. The methods of patrol are beat, selective enforcement, saturation, and proactive or reactive patrol. Deterrence and team policing are also explained. The equipment and safety concerns of patrol, as presented in Chapter 3, include handguns, body armor, standard and additional equipment, splitting of partners, communication, and tactical errors. Chapter 4 focuses on mental and physical preparation, such as mental attitude, cardiovascular condition, strength training, flexibility, diet, smoking, and fitness programs. Also, arrest and control measures, such as carotid restraint, gun take-away and retention, and impact weapons, are covered in this chapter. Chapter 5 centers on police and community relations, including the role of education, community relations programs, and media relations. Tactical response to specific incidents, such as family disturbance and death investigation, are presented in Chapter 6. Procedures for vehicle pullover and approach are provided in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 introduces information about street drugs. Chapter 9 focuses on such legal issues as search and seizure, arrest and detention, interview, use of force, and courtroom testimony. Contemporary issues such as child sexual abuse, gangs, and homelessness are addressed in Chapter 10.
