Contagious Exposure Report and Infection Control: General Order Number 0513-87, June 9, 1987

NCJ Number

Date Published

Length

Annotation
This general order establishes procedures and guidelines for infection control and filing a contagious exposure report for personnel of the Cedar Rapids Police Department (Iowa).
Abstract
Significant exposure is defined as direct skin or mucous membrane contact with body fluids (e.g., blood, vomit, urine, secretions) of an individual who potentially has an infectious disease. Infectious diseases covered by the guidelines include hepatitis B, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), tuberculosis, neisseria meningitis, and syphilis. Major guidelines to minimize risk of transmission of these diseases include frequent hand washing, and use of gloves when there is a likelihood of coming into contact with blood and body fluids. It is recommended that all blood and body fluids be treated as though they were contaminated and that appropriate precautions be taken. Additional guidelines cover cleaning and decontamination of equipment and vehicles. Employees who believe they have had a significant exposure must complete the contagious exposure report and deliver it to the desk commander for review. Employees will be notified if any followup or preventive treatment is required. A list of the infectious diseases includes their primary modes of transmission. A copy of the report form and directions for its completion also are provided.
