A CONFERENCE WAS CONDUCTED ON THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING A UNIFORM NATIONWIDE EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER.
Abstract
REPRESENTATIVES OF ORGANIZATIONS IN THE EMERGENCY SERVICE FIELD AND THE COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY MET WITH CONCERNED GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO DEFINE THE CONCEPT OF A SINGLE EMERGENCY NUMBER AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION AT THE LOCAL LEVEL, TO COORDINATE DIALOGUE ON THE COMMAND CONTROL BACKUP REQUIRED FOR A SINGLE NUMBER, AND TO ASSESS THE TECHNICAL PROBLEMS INVOLVED. THE CONFERENCE SUCCEEDED IN DEFINING THE CONCEPT OF AN EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER BUT FAILED TO COMPLETELY RESOLVE ISSUES OF COMMAND, CONTROL, BACKUP, AND TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION.
