Intended for use in classes in constitutional law with an emphasis on its criminal aspects, this book explains how the U.S. Constitution limits the responsibilities and powers of the criminal justice system and criminal justice professionals.
Abstract
Two introductory chapters trace the history of the constitutional development of the United States and its judicial system. Following a chapter on States' right to arrest, detain, and punish citizens, series of chapters delineates Bill-of-Rights guarantees, including freedom of speech, press, assembly, and movement; search-and-seizure protections; and rights of the accused with respect to the state's evidence collection and trial procedures. Other constitutional restrictions on the state pertain to sentencing and corrections conditions. Remaining chapters explain constitutional civil rights, plea bargaining, and entrapment. Glossary, table of cases, subject index, and copy of the U.S. Constitution.
