A HANDBOOK DESCRIBING ALL ASPECTS OF THE INTERN'S JOB REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE ADULT PROBATION VOLUNTEER SERVICES PROGRAM IS PRESENTED; PROGRAM PROCEDURES, FORMS, AND TERMINOLOGY ARE EMPHASIZED.
Abstract
EACH SEMESTER THE OFFICE OF ADULT PROBATION PLACES APPROXIMATELY 50 COLLEGE SENIORS WHO ARE MAJORING IN RELATED FIELDS IN PROBATION OFFICES THROUGHOUT CONNECTICUT. THE PROGRAM HAS EXPERIENCED GREAT SUCCESS BECAUSE OF THE UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP WHICH DEVELOPS BETWEEN THE STUDENT INTERN AND THE PROBATION OFFICER ASSIGNED TO WORK WITH HIM. IN 1978, INTERNS COMMITTED 19,500 MANHOURS TO THE AGENCY. SINCE 1975, THE AGENCY HAS BENEFITED FROM THE WORK OF 300 STUDENTS WHO CONTRIBUTED OVER 50,000 MANHOURS TO THE SYSTEM. UPON COMPLETION OF TRAINING, THE INTERN WORKS FOR ONE SEMESTER WITH A PROBATION OFFICER FROM 18 TO 40 HOURS WEEKLY AND RECEIVES APPROPRIATE CREDIT FOR THE WORK COMMITMENT. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES INCLUDE ENABLING THE INTERN TO MAKE A VALID CAREER DECISION BASED ON PROGRAM PARTICIPATION, DEVELOPING A RESOURCE OF TRAINED PERSONNEL FOR THE PROBATION DEPARTMENT, AND ASSISTING THE DEPARTMENT IN ACHIEVING ITS GOALS MORE EFFICIENTLY. EACH INTERN MUST COMPLETE AN ORIENTATION PHASE, A WORK PHASE, AND AN EVALUATION PHASE DURING THE PROGRAM. INTERNS MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH ALL FORMS UTILIZED BY THE AGENCY, AS PRESENTED HEREIN. SUCH FORMS INCLUDE THE INTERN MONTHLY REPORTS, THE MONTHLY REPORTS OF THE PROBATIONERS, FIELD SUPERVISION FACT SHEETS, PERIODIC PROGRESS REPORTS, AND SCHOOL INFORMATION SHEETS. IN ADDITION, INTERNS MUST BECOME FAMILIAR WITH COMMON ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMINOLOGY USED BY THE AGENCY. THE PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATION AND REPORT REPRESENT A MAJOR PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY OF PROBATION OFFICERS AND THE INTERNS WHO WORK WITH THEM. SAMPLE FORM EXHIBITS ARE PROVIDED WITH THE TEXT. (LWM)
