RESULTS OF A STUDY OF PRISONERS' WIVES' ATTITUDES CONCERNING CONJUGAL VISITATION AND OUTLINE OF LEGAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL ISSUES INVOLVED.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS PART OF AN INTENSIVE STUDY OF BLACK PRISONERS' FAMILIES IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND CONSISTED OF INTERVIEWS WITH 93 WIVES TO DETERMINE IF THEY WOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CONJUGAL VISITATION RIGHTS AND WITH WHAT FREQUENCY. OVER HALF OF THE RESPONDENTS FAVORED EXTENSION OF VISITATION RIGHTS AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. THE AUTHOR CONTENDS THAT WHILE CONJUGAL VISITATION MAY BE CONSIDERED A PRIVILEGE FOR THE PRISONER, IT IS A RIGHT OF THE PRISONER'S SPOUSE AND AS SUCH MAY NOT BE REVOKED WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF LAW. THE BENEFITS OF CONJUGAL VISITATION IN PROMOTING REHABILITATION ARE DISCUSSED AND TYPICAL OBJECTIONS ARE IDENTIFIED. THE AUTHOR ADVISES USE OF THE COURTS TO SECURE CONJUGAL VISITATION RIGHTS.
