Abstract
Guidelines to interrogating a suspect cover preparation, location, privacy, the interrogation room, Miranda warnings, interviewing techniques, and interpreting the suspect's comments and body language. Also considered are interviewing juveniles and videotaping. Eyewitness identification and interviewing both cooperative and uncooperative victims and witnesses are examined. To help officers quickly assess suspects, the book reviews profiles of antisocial, hysterical, schizoid, paranoid, and sadistic personalities. Clues that nicknames and tattoos provide to personality are discussed. Criminal profiles are presented for the following: homicide, including serial, sadistic, and child killers; assault; armed robbery; kidnapping; rape; child molesters; burglary; check and credit card offenses; drug offenders; arson and bombing. Areas covered within these chapters include hostage negotiations, interviews with child victims, and drug informants. Each profile provides routine questions that might be useful and suggestions regarding interrogation procedures. Approximately 30 references and index.
