This chapter summarizes the main points of the preceding chapters and sets out an agenda for future research on serious and violent juvenile (SVJ) offenders.

Abstract

After summarizing the preceding chapters of the book, this chapter addresses the extent to which the juvenile justice system can deal with SVJ offenders and the extent to which parents, schools, neighborhoods and public health approaches can assist in preventing SVJ offending, and sets out an agenda for future research on SVJ offenders. The chapter includes an appendix titled "Serious, Violent, and Chronic Juvenile Offenders - An Assessment of the Extent of and Trends in Officially Recognized Serious Criminal Behavior in a Delinquent Population." This descriptive study examines five basic topics encountered in debates over juvenile justice policies and procedures: (1) the proportions of serious and violent offenders in the officially recognized delinquent population; (2) increases in the proportions; (3) referral of SVJ offenders in recent years for more serious and violent crimes; (4) chronic offenders as SVJ offenders; and (5) younger ages for the onset of officially recognized juvenile violence and serious offending.
